Never done
Pilates here?
Start on this page.
Small classes. One teacher, 25 years in. You'll be corrected by name — and you'll know why.

New to Pilates, coming back after a break, curious about the equipment, or you'd rather start one-on-one — this page shows you where to begin.

FIND YOUR WAY IN
Which class should I start with?
Most people start with Mat or ReForMat. If you're not sure, start there.

Mat & ReForMat™
Best if: you're new, returning after a break, or you want the strongest possible foundation.
Mat work is where the method was built, and it's what I'm best known for.
ReForMat is my own class — I've taken the reformer and apparatus repertoire and rebuilt it for the mat, so you get the same work without the machine doing any of it for you. People are consistently surprised by how hard it is.

No equipment needed. Come as you are.
Small Group Reformer & Tower
Best if: you've done Pilates before, or you want hands-on attention on the equipment.

Small groups, duets, and trios — never a crowded room. On the apparatus, I need to see your ribs, your pelvis, and your breath. That's not possible with thirty people, so I don't teach thirty people.
Garuda
Best if: you already move well and you want something you can't get anywhere else nearby.

Garuda was created by James D'Silva, and its tagline is "Where
Pilates ends, Garuda begins."
It takes the core control of Pilates and adds the breath of yoga and the flow of dance — continuous, rhythmic, three-dimensional.
I'm the only certified Garuda teacher on the East Coast, and I teach it on the mat, at the barre, on the reformer, and on the full Garuda apparatus.
YOUR FIRST CLASS
Your first class, start to finish
A few practical things, so the only thing on your mind when you walk in is the movement.
BEFORE YOU COME
Arrive 10 minutes early. We're at 145 Plymouth Street in DUMBO.
The F to York Street or the A/C to High Street are the closest trains.
Wear something fitted enough that I can see your alignment — leggings and a fitted top are perfect.
Grip socks are required on the apparatus. We sell them, or you can bring your own.
Bring water. That's it — mats and all equipment are here.
Tell me about anything going on in your body — surgeries, injuries, pregnancy, a shoulder that's been complaining for a year. Not so I can excuse you from the work, but so I can give you the right version of it.
WHAT TO EXPECT
To be spoken to directly. I'll use your name, and I'll tell you what to change.
Corrections and cueing as you move — not a class you disappear into the back of.
That's the whole point. It's why the classes stay small.

Who's teaching you

I've been teaching Pilates in New York for 25 years, and working in fitness for 35. I trained at UC Berkeley, earning a B.A. in Physical Education with exercise physiology and sports medicine; earned my American College of Sports Medicine certification in 1990; and completed full Mat and Apparatus certification through the Kelly Kane School of Core Integration. I'm also the only certified Garuda teacher on the East Coast.

I've been on faculty at Steps on Broadway, Dance New Amsterdam, Peridance, Five Pillars Yoga, and Katona Yoga, and I built the Steele Pilates program at St. Marks Yoga. In 2005, I created my own Pilates mat certification program, and I've trained instructors in the U.S. and abroad ever since—my courses run twice a year.

Questions worth asking any studio.
Pilates is growing fast, and instructor training hasn't kept pace with it. Before you commit anywhere — here or elsewhere — these are fair questions, and any good teacher will be glad you asked.
How long was your instructor's training, and how many supervised teaching hours did it require?
How many people are in the class?
Will anyone watch me specifically?
What happens if something hurts?
Ask me these. I'll answer them in detail.
